WHAT IS H2?
H2 is the most abundant element in the universe and the main element that keeps the sun going.
How do you get clean H2?
H2 together with oxygen are the two elements that make up water. At atmospheric pressure and normal temperature, hydrogen (H2) is a gas.
H2 can be obtained in a clean way, without greenhouse gas emissions, through the process of electrolysis of water. This results in the gases H2 and O2.
If the electrolysers are powered by electricity generated by photovoltaic panels or wind energy, the process is 100% clean and sustainable.
H2 how it works
It is the most abundant element in the universe and the main element.
01 Sun – photovoltaic panels
Sunlight, which is electromagnetic radiation, falls on a photovoltaic plate. There it activates a silicon film which causes its atoms to release their electrons. These electrons follow a fixed path through a circuit, thus generating an electric current that can power electrical devices.
02 Air (wind) – wind mills
Windmills are very large dynamos, where the wind pushes against the blades that turn the dynamo inside. The magnets inside the dynamo create an electric current that can power electrical appliances.
03 Water
Water is a chemical compound of the elements hydrogen and oxygen. If their bond is broken, water, which is liquid at room temperature and pressure, is transformed into the gases hydrogen and oxygen.
04 Electrolyser
An apparatus that breaks the water molecule by means of an electric current into its hydrogen and oxygen elements. By exposing water to two electrodes of opposite polarity, cathode and anode, the hydrogen ions are isolated and pure hydrogen is obtained.
05 Hydrogen
Hydrogen under normal environmental circumstances is a very light gas. However, in terms of energy/weight equivalence it has a higher energy value than petrol or methane.
06 Supply
The hydrogen is supplied under pressure. Depending on the final application, the gas is compressed to different pressures, which can vary from 80bar to 900bar, for transport or consumption.
07 Vehicles/Industry
Applied to vehicles and industry, hydrogen offers the possibility to eliminate greenhouse and noxious gas emissions. In processes where hydrogen can react with direct oxygen, such as in combustion stacks or controlled industrial processes, it will produce efficient and completely clean energy.
08 Water
With the water emitted by hydrogen vehicles, the circle is closed and becomes 100% sustainable. The re-emitted water can serve as feedstock for hydrogen generation.
Uses of hydrogen
Powering electric vehicles with a combustion cell
Replacing carbon gases in industrial processes, reducing or even eliminating harmful emissions
Energy storage
Hydrogen is efficient and sustainable.
These characteristics make it a promising proposition for a future without harmful emissions.
Advantages of H2
Advantages that can be gained by using a combustion cell in an electric vehicle
